Zandana (next to Dolno Cherkovishte)

The cave is located near the village of Dolno Cherkovishte, Stambolovo municipality. It is 19 meters deep and 76 meters long.

The name of the cave came from the Turkish word “zandan”. Legend has it that guilty people were throw there during Turkish slavery.

It is reported that in the 70s of the last centry there were dumped preparations and fertilizers.

This cave is one of the few natural habitats in which protected bat species form colonies. From may to august, they raise their young, and from november to march – hibernate. The cave is inhabited by several species of bats, including Mediterranean Horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus еuryale), Blasius’s horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus blasii), Lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) and Greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum).
