Kostenets

Kostenets municipality is located between the slopes of two mountains – Rila and Ihtiman Sredna Gora.  With its three mineral springs and interesting culture, it attracts many tourists.

On the territory of the municipality is located the fortress Trayanovi Vrata – important fortress for the Roman period, but also for the two Bulgarian kingdoms. The fortress is with the proportions 90×40 meters and is 15 km from the town of Kostenets. There in 986 AC Tsar Samuel wins a big battle against the byzantine emperor Vasily II.

In the resort “vili Kostenets”, is located the Kostenets waterfall, which is 10 m high. There are poems of Ivan Vazov (popular bulgarian author), where he writes about the magnificent waterfall.

A large part of Vili Kostenets is located in Rila National Park, which is the biggest one in Bulgaria and one of the most important for the european biodiversity. The area covers 81 046 ha and half of it is over 2000 meters above sea level. 90% of the ecosystems in Rila are natural. In the park there are more than 140 lakes and one of the most popular are the Seven Rila Lakes, which are located between 2100-2500 meters above sea level in the northwestern part of the mountain.
