From 4 to 67 km – “Race in the Eastern Rhodopes”

From 4 to 67 km – “Race in the Eastern Rhodopes”

On October 14 (Saturday), from Bulgaria Square in the town of Krumovgrad, the third edition of the ultramarathon “Race in the Eastern Rhodopes” will begin, organized by the Science for Nature Foundation. The area offers rich biodiversity and carries the mystique of its centuries-old history.

Each participant will be able to choose from one of four distances:

🐺 Wild Route: 67 km, +2500 m

It’s no coincidence that runners registered for this distance follow the trail of the wolf! The Wild Route is exactly what we think of when someone mentions the Eastern Rhodopes. It combines all the sights and feelings that make people fall in love with this region and come back again and again for more.

🐗 Half-Wild Route: 37 km, +1500 m

Don’t be misled by the name—this 37 km route with 1500 meters of elevation gain is no easy feat. One of the route’s challenges is Dyushun Dere (“dyushun” meaning “fall” in Turkish), where every step must be taken with care.

🐾 Tame Route: 21 km, +700 m

This classic half-marathon distance is a great introduction to the Eastern Rhodopes and its highest local peak—Iran Tepe.

🐾 Fun Run: 4 km, +100 m

A run for young and old alike, exploring the local sights of Krumovgrad.

Participants are welcome to bring their pets and enjoy the scenery and trails together. At the aid stations, we’ve provided water and rest areas for both two-legged and four-legged athletes.

The race routes run entirely along untrodden paths and do not intersect with any marked tourist or other trails, as there are no official marked hiking trails in the area. This makes the region even more appealing for adventurers. Every participant will get the chance to experience both well-known cultural landmarks like Tatul, and natural wonders like Sheytan Dere. While the elevation gain is moderate, the technical ascents and descents will challenge even the most dedicated trail runners.

Each race distance is symbolized by animal tracks that can be found in the Eastern Rhodopes. Our team is engaged in biodiversity conservation, and organizing a mountain marathon is one way to help more people connect with this wild and vibrant place.

This year, the event is once again supported by companies like Dundee Precious Metals Bulgaria, Sport Depot, Pepsi, Euroins, RooBar, MelliGEL, ZooFamilia, Purina, and others, who are providing prizes and surprises for all participants.
