The “Revive a Fountain” Mission

The mission to repair fountains, initiated by Science for Nature, continues at full speed. Our team keeps meeting enthusiastic supporters and people who share the idea of reviving the fountains across our country.

The focus of the “Revive a Fountain” campaign is the restoration of fountains located in the Rhodope region, outside populated areas. Our goal is to ensure that as many tourists, farm and wild animals, or simply passersby as possible have access to fresh drinking water.

Through our joint efforts in recent months, we have managed to restore and bring new life to around 60 fountains in the municipalities of Kresna, Sandanski, Velingrad, Devin, Asenovgrad, Stambolovo, and others.

The “revival” process includes clearing overgrown vegetation and household waste around the fountains, removing limescale and deposits from the fountain’s façade, cleaning the basin, and rerouting or restoring the water path from the spring to the fountain. In some cases, replacing the basin or building a new one is necessary, which requires our “missionaries” to stay on-site for several days. This gives us the opportunity to connect with the local population, who often take our work to heart and joyfully share the long-standing history of the fountain we are restoring.

Many of these fountains were built in memory of a family or person who contributed something valuable to these small, tucked-away villages in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains.
